Science

We have a very strong and enthusiastic Science Department at Hurst Lodge and encourage pupils to take an interest in Science inside and outside the classroom. We run a Science club and a weekly Science Plus drop-in session to help and support pupils with classwork or homework. We have many trips and visits to inspire pupils and also welcome many visitors such as Physicists from the University of Surrey who regularly work with our Year 9 pupils. Visits have included Year 10 attending the Royal Society Summer Exhibition, Year 8 pupils attending TEENTECH and QinetiQ, Year 7 making documentaries at Sky Studios and a fantastic Science trip to Florida.

At KS3 pupils follow Activate Science as a course. They are taught 4 lessons a week a topic at a time to cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each topic has a short end of unit test.

In Year 9 pupils begin their KS4 courses which will lead to three separate GCSEs: Biology, Chemistry and Physics or to two GCSEs in Combined Science (Trilogy). We are also able to offer Entry Level Certificate in Science. The GCSE courses are taught by specialist teachers to ensure a high level of enthusiasm and knowledge to benefit the pupils.
